  ADVOCATE: (v. ad v' kat: n. ad v' kit or ad ve kat) v. -cat ed, -cat ing , n. speak in favor of; recommend publicly: 1. person who pleads or argues for: an advocate of peace. Syn. n. 1. champion; supporter.

The goal of an Advocate is help break down the barriers between the Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Hearing community by providing education and awareness. The purpose of this service is to improve the quality of Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals' lives.

Enabling and empowering clients to direct their own lives has been part of GLAD's philosophy from the beginning. The philosophy of independent living as including consumer control, peer support, self-help, self-determination, equal access, and individual and system advocacy, in order to maximize the leadership empowerment, independence, and productivity of Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing persons.
